The following letter has been received from North West Air Ambulance Charity.
"Dear Mrs Hankey
On behalf of everyone at the North West Air Ambulance Charity, I would like to thank you for the generous donation of £2420.00 received as a kind contribution towards our funds. As you are aware, we are a registered charity and we need to raise over £4.3 million this year to remain operational. We receive no mainstream funding and we therefore depend upon the support and generosity of individuals, voluntary organisations and businesses to keep our two helicopters in the air and saving lives.
As an indication, and to help you see how vital your contribution is to us, below are some examples of how your donations can help.
£ 5.50 Funds both aircraft for 1 minute
£ 55.00 Funds both aircraft for approximately 10 minutes (the average time it
takes to reach a casualty in the north west.
£ 150.00 Funds a paramedic for a day
£ 750.00 Funds a fully equipped and staffed helicopter for 1 hour
£2000.00 Could re-kit a crew member with a new uniform
Thank you once again for your kind support.
Yours sincerely
Lynda Brislin, Chief Executive"

MEDICAL CORNER IS BACK! – THIS MONTH "FOOD AND HEALTH"
Most people recognise that overeating and snacking between meals, particularly of carbohydrates and fats, is not a healthy lifestyle but is common in Western Society. This is particularly so for those leading sedentary lives without exercise and those, through no fault of their own carrying genes for type 2 Diabetes and adverse lipid profiles where such diets will bring out vascular (artery) diseases at an earlier age. Smoking compounds that situation.
Rather than talk about this I would like to mention several adverse reactions to food or drinks of which you may be less aware.
Food Allergy - This is symptoms triggered by foods which may come on suddenly and occasionally severely and for which blood testing demonstrates a high level of specific antibodies in the blood. 90% of such cases are caused by the following foods: Treenuts (eg. almonds, walnuts, pecans), peanuts, milk, eggs, fish, crustacean shellfish, wheat and soya beans. Symptoms are usually acute skin reactions/swelling, gastrointestinal symptoms and asthma like symptoms and occasionally collapse(anaphylaxis) and uncommonly death. Approximately 1% of the population have some form of food allergy, often associated with other allergies eg hay fever or animal allergy. Identification and avoidance(sometimes of even minute quantities) of foods is key to management. Symptoms can be treated with antihistamines, steroids and in severe cases adrenalin by injection under the skin which can be life saving. True allergy (or atopy as it is also known) often occurs in other family members.
Coeliac Disease - This is not a true allergy but a disease in which the body reacts by producing a different type of antibody togluthen in wheat products. It can present at any age in life. Serious cases malabsorb their food can be very ill with weight loss, anaemia and diarrhoea. Mild cases may have virtually no symptoms apart from vague ill health or mild anaemia. There are specific tests for this condition which is not that uncommon and often undiagnosed. Treatment is a gluthen free diet.
Food Intolerances - This is a term applied to all other adverse food reactions for which no easy tests are available and which cover several conditions.
Food additives/preservatives such as sulphites (in wines, preserved fruits, processed meats etc) Azo dyes eg. Tartrazine, Monosodium glutamate, salycilates (Aspirin like compounds in some fruits), benzoates,& aspartame can all give bad reactions and sulphites can rarely give life threatening reactions as with allergy. Again skin reactions are the commonest symptom eg hives, itching or flushing, but rhinitis, sneezing, asthma, &bowel symptoms can occur. Adverse behavioural problems in children and young adults have been linked to food additives but this is still controversial.
Vasoactive amine chemicals in ripe cheeses, fish, cured sausage, red wine, chocolate & pickled vegetables can cause cramps, flushing, headaches & palpitations in a dose related manner. It explains why someone only gets a headache with red and not white wine and why chocolate is a common cause of headaches.
Caffeine found in medication, tea, coffee & cocoa cola can induce dose dependent agitation, headache, nausea & tremors in some.
Lack of intestinal enzymeseg Lactase can cause cow’s milk intolerance with diarrhoea in some especially children.
All the above are reasonably well recognised and anyone presenting with recurrent headaches, palpitations, diarrhoea, runny nose etc for which there is no obvious cause then adverse food reactions need to be considered. But food intolerance is blamed on many other conditions by some practitioners. Conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome, chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia and other aches and pains have all been considered.
Indeed there is some evidence that irritable bowel syndrome (abdominal pains/bloating/bowel upset with normal tests) may be food induced in as many as 50% with wheat being the likely culprit. There is much less evidence for other conditions and there is certainly no tests for food intolerances except for careful elimination diets with dietician help. Food allergy tests are invariably negative and certain private practitioners offer expensive tests with no proven scientific evidence to back them up, so beware. However with any unexplained symptoms in an otherwise healthy individual it is worth considering food intolerance as a cause. So if you have been checked out and told you have no disease & other causes exclude ( eg medication side effects) but still have recurrent longstanding unexplained ‘nuisance’ symptoms then consider there may be a simple dietary explanation.

At the January meeting the new President, Margaret McDonald presented Jane Schofield with a Gift Voucher in appreciation of her three years term as President (2009 - 2011)
The speaker was Louise Matson who showed us how to decorate Petit Fours with a wide selection of toppings, but first we were invited to sample some of the ones she had prepared earlier. Members were also invited to have a go at decorating the cakes themselves and were allowed to keep their efforts.
The next meeting will be on February 14th, when the subject of the speaker, Keith Viggers will be “Mystery Shopping” If you would like to come to the meeting please phone the President, Margaret McDonald on 01606 331059

MANCHESTER AIRPORT
A member of the Community Relations Team attends Knutsford Library each Tuesday (0930-1230 & 1315-17:00 hrs and 1200-1900 hrs on the first Tuesday of each month). They are there to have face to face conversations with members of the public about any issues relating to the Airport. Each year they hold Mobile Outreach sessions at 10 or more venues across Cheshire and Greater Manchester. Feedback reveals that people value the opportunity to discuss a concern or a Community Trust Fund Application in person.

Many thanks go again to all those who contributed to another very successful Christmas card recycling campaign with an incredible 109.5kgs of cards being recycled this year, bringing our running total to a staggering 508kgs over the last 6 years! Thanks also go to the Village Shop for once again supporting the campaign.
Many people had saved all their greetings cards throughout the year which added to our fantastic total – please do the same again this year.
Please recycle whatever you can, whenever you can – thank you! Claire Lofthouse

FRIENDS OF ANTROBUS ST MARK'S SCHOOL
This year it’s a Leap Year and on Wednesday, 29th February, tradition dictates that is the time for ladies to propose to their partners. Friends of Antrobus St Mark's would just like to say that if that’s your plan “Good Luck”, but don’t forget to attend the next Friends Meeting at school 9am first!
A quick update on fundraising at the end of last year shows it has boosted our funds by just under a £1000. From the combined efforts of the November car boot sale, school cake sale along with Christmas cards and wrap it came to a grand total of £964.52. Thank you to all volunteers, cake makers and those of you who got into the Christmas spirit to support the school.
The children had a great start to 2012 as on their return to school Friends had organised an in-school theatre visit which performed Jack and The Beanstalk. We think the teachers enjoyed it just as much as the children. Looking to the future we will be holding a Bingo night. Dates have yet to be set so watch this space but we are aiming for March-April time.
Following on from last year’s success, starting on 18th May we’re holding what is becoming our Annual Scarecrow weekend. Now is the time to get your thinking caps on as there were so many great characters bringing the village to life last year.
Questions are already being asked about our famous Summer Ball and we can now confirm that it will be held on 15th June. That gives everyone enough time to dust down the black tie, grab the baby sitter and book the all-important taxi ride home.
Our next meeting will be on Monday 27th February, 8pm at the Antrobus Arms and then on Wednesday, 29th February, 9am at school.
Remember if you would like a chat about Friends and how you could get involved, please call Jane Elliott on 07761 742229 or find her in the playground. If you would like to keep up with events you can find us at www.antrobus-school.co.uk/friendsreunion.asp
If you would like to support us and would also like the opportunity to raise your bank balance then don’t forget our 100+ Club. It is our monthly prize draw where members can win £25 each month and a jackpot of £100 for the special Christmas Draw. There are numbers still available for those wishing to join so speak to Jane Elliott if you want to be included in the next draw.
Next steps:
1. An Antrobus Parish Council open meeting for the public to attend and ask questions of Crosby’s and to hear residents’ views is arranged for 7pm on Thursday 2nd February at Antrobus School. This will be an important meeting to show/voice your objection to Councillors from CWAC who will be attending and taking note of the scale and nature of objections.
2. An open CWAC Planning Committee of Councillors (date to be confirmed) will consider whether to approve or refuse Crosby’s application. It will be important for as many of us as possible to also attend this Committee meeting in Winsford. We will be in touch again once the date has been confirmed.
Please submit your objections urgently – unless your written comments are received by Cheshire West and Chester Council before 6th February, they may not be taken into consideration. You have two ways to object though you may find sending a letter (quoting “Planning ref: 11/05876/FUL” ) is the most straightforward:

PLAYGROUND NOTICE
As previously reported in the Village News it is necessary to revise the east/south east boundaries of the Jubilee Playground.
In order to preserve a legal right of way which crosses part of the playing field the Parish Council is making some small alterations to the boundary fence of the children’s playground.
This work will be undertaken within the next few weeks and it will therefore be necessary for the Playground to be closed for a brief period. The work will comprise the relocation of two sections of the boundary fence, some consequential work on the special playground surface and changes to the current ground games which are marked out on that surface.
After consultation with local children, via the School, the maze game will be retained and the other two ground games (hopscotch and grandmother’s footsteps) will be removed as they cannot be safely accommodated within the reduced area.
Parents are requested to ensure that their children do not attempt to access the playground whilst it is closed and the works are in progress.
AN OPEN LETTER TO ALL RESIDENTS OF ANTROBUS VILLAGE
As there appears to be some confusion in the village over the boundary of the playing field and adjoining land, this letter is to set the record straight.
Mr H Sutcliffe obtained a copy of the deeds from solicitors and these were given to Antrobus Parish Council so that they may have access to records of boundaries for the purpose of work to be carried out on the playing field.
Subsequently it was found that a mistake was made when the work was undertaken on the playing field. This was a mistake by Antrobus Parish Council and amounted to approximately three metres of land.
It is hoped that this boundary mistake will be rectified in the next few weeks.
